Tony Mowbray reveals Régis Le Bris meeting and reflects on ‘strained’ Kyril Louis-Dreyfus relationship
Former Sunderland head coach Tony Mowbray has once again reflected on his time at the club. After meeting Sunderland head coach Règis Le Bris for the first time, Tony Mowbray shared his first impressions and once again considered his departure from the team the previous season. After taking over from Alex Neil during the team’s first season back in the Championship, the former manager of Middlesbrough, Celtic, and West Brom led Sunderland to a top-six finish and a play-off campaign. Mowbray’s Premier League dream was dashed in the semi-final by eventual promotion winners Luton Town.
Mowbray stayed at the Academy of Light and led the squad into the next season, despite rumors that Sunderland were considering alternative management options the following summer. But with the Black Cats in ninth place in the Championship, Mowbray was fired after 15 months in command.
After his time at Sunderland, Mowbray took over at Birmingham City, but he was forced to resign after being diagnosed with colon cancer. Now that he is recovering, the former defender has made a number of appearances recently, including one earlier in the season at the Stadium of Light, when he most likely met new head coach Le Bris.
When discussing his departure from Sunderland with Bernie Slaven, Mowbray remarked, “I think it came as a surprise to me.” “I believe that tensions have just increased. I must admit that this club is incredible. To me, the fans have been incredible. Sunderland fans have been incredibly welcoming, especially considering how much of my career I played for Middlesbrough. The football has been a huge hit with them. We were sixth, therefore I don’t think results had anything to do with my job loss.
