James Franklin’s last media appearance occurred during Penn State’s Peach Bowl loss to Ole Miss, which exposed one of the team’s primary weaknesses in 2023. The wide receivers were ineffective because they didn’t make a reception until the fourth quarter.

A few days following the Peach Bowl, Penn State added a well-known player to its wide receiving corps. On January 3, Ohio State receiver Julian Fleming, a former Southern Columbia standout, committed to the Nittany Lions. On January 11, he enlisted and was made public.
