Columbus, OhioWhile recruiting elite wide receivers from across the nation has never been a problem for Ohio State assistant football coach Brian Hartline, his most recent discovery wasn’t meant to necessitate it.
When Chris Henry Jr. impressed during a day camp in 2022, Hartline came across him as a Cincinnati eighth grader who already appeared physically prepared for high school football.
After spending his freshman season developing into one of the best players in the 2026 class, Henry returned to that camp a year later. He was also the first recruit for the Buckeyes in 2026 before the end of the summer.
The latest major acquisition for Hartline is the nation’s third-ranked player and best wide receiver; he is similar to Jeremiah Smith and Marvin Harrison Jr. This time, though, a player of that caliber would be living with former NFL player Pacman Jones and growing right under Hartline’s nose.
Henry, though, is now moving to the west to complete his studies at one of the best universities in the country.
Henry is going to transfer to Mater Dei High School in California. OSU has frequently admired the quality at this school, but they haven’t been able to secure it. But perhaps that can start to change now that Henry will be in the building for the next two years, along with a few other guys who are already enthusiastic about Ohio State.
At its 63rd Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet on Monday at the Ohio Union, the Columbus Chapter of the National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Football Hall of Fame will honor offensive lineman Avery Henry and defensive line coach Larry Johnson with awards.
Johnson was given the Ohio Gold Award, which is given out every year to a former player, coach, official, or anybody else who has improved football in Central Ohio. Archie Griffin, Joey Galloway, Eddie George, Orlando Pace, Troy Smith, and most recently head coach Ryan Day, who took home the prize the previous year, are among the other former OSU players that have won the honor.
Henry will be the recipient of the Tyson Gentry Courage Award, which is given to a player, coach, employee, or supporter whose deeds most exemplify the valiant leadership traits exhibited by the former wide receiver for whom the award is named. Gentry was a walk-on with the Buckeyes from 2004 to 2006 when he suffered a partial paralysis in a spring scrimmage.
at the 2022 recruiting class, Henry was ranked No. 58 offensive tackle and No. 720 player when he arrived at Columbus. Prior to being seen by the Buckeyes, he had committed to Iowa State. He had a strong senior year at Saint Clairsville High School and possessed some of the same qualities that had formerly made Dawand Jones a hidden diamond.
Sadly, in December 2022, he received a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a rare kind of bone cancer, which put an end to his football career. After a five-month battle, he went into remission, and in July 2023, he announced his medical retirement from football.
