In 2020, when the world had completely collapsed due to the COVID-19 epidemic and the ensuing lockdowns, comedian and actor Djalili relocated to Ipswich.
After almost five years, he has made the decision to remain, and he has stated that Ipswich’s residents and their love of humor have been crucial in making our town his home.
“I adore it,” he declared. It’s an amazing location. “I’ve been here four years, and I haven’t left,” I stated when I was on stage in Griff Rhys Jones’ Christmas concert. And a man in
the front row simply said, “Why?”
“I thought, it’s a good question, and I’ll tell you why – because it’s a great place to live. It’s among the best and most underappreciated places to live in the entire United Kingdom.
“The marina resembles the French Riviera when you look at it. Flatford Mill and Constable are examples of culture. You’re close to the coast.Everything you require is in this
place.
Many people may recognize Djalili from his time on the comedy circuit and from television series including His Dark Materials, Have I Got News for You, and Channel 4’s The
Change, where he portrayed Bridget Christie’s husband.
He has also appeared films from Journey to Bethlehem and The Infidel to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
His upcoming show at Ipswich’s Regent Theatre on Friday, Namaste, is no different. The show considers events playing out on the world’s stage, from terrorism to the ongoing
war in Gaza.
In tackling topics such as these, there is always an element of danger, but this is something comedians must navigate.
“Some people will come to shows wondering, are we going to see a comedian cancel himself in real life?” Djalili said.
“Cancel culture is a real thing. It’s happened to me a few times. I was cancelled during 9/11 just for being Middle Eastern.
“But people turn to stand-up comedians to deal with the truth. To say what people are thinking but would never dare say is comedy at the highest level.”
There are, of course, some boundaries; he believes strongly that laughing at the suffering of others has no place in comedy.
He is looking forward to sharing Namaste with Ipswich, having already toured the USA, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia during 2024, beginning the UK leg of his tour in
October.
Preparing for Friday’s show at the Regent, he is particularly excited to introduce supporting act Boothby Graffoe to audiences, who he described as a “comedian’s comedian”.
“Ipswich is a very comedy-savvy crowd, which is why I think they’ll love him there,” he said.
This place is a comedy bubble. We’ll be discussing some really challenging topics in a positive, upbeat, and hopeful way while also providing some solutions.
Despite being known as a Chelsea supporter, Djalili was thrilled to watch Ipswich Town defeat Chelsea 2-0 at the end of December, Town’s first Premier League home victory in
22 years.
