Club have 48 hours to make transfer decision on Sheffield Wednesday ‘target’
With a critical deadline reportedly approaching, Sheffield Wednesday will learn more about their chances of
acquiring Tom Cannon this week.
After Cannon’s stellar first half of the season on loan at Stoke City, the Owls are among a number of Championship
teams that have expressed interest in signing him this month. Others appear to be wondering what the 22-year-old
may do for teams higher up the table after he scored nine goals in 22 games for the struggling Potters.
Summer interest in Cannon has been rekindled by teams like Sheffield United and Sunderland, but earlier this
month, journalist Alan Nixon said that Wednesday and Championship underdog Luton Town were also considering
a mid-season move. But Nixon gave a new update on Sunday, suggesting that all possible bidders may soon have to
move on.
If Cannon is to switch clubs this month, then parent club Leicester City will first have to cut short his season-long
Stoke spell before sanctioning a second temporary move. And while the Foxes are well within their rights to do so,
Nixon claims they only have until Wednesday.
If the Republic of Ireland international is still at the Bet365 Stadium on Thursday, he will stay there until the
summer since a break clause in his loan agreement is set to expire around the middle of this month. Leicester may be
persuaded by a loan-to-buy offer, but it is unclear if they will decide to give their striker a chance further up the
league.
In Sunday’s report, Nixon mentioned Wednesday and Luton once again, although he maintained that the two had
just enquired about Cannon’s availability. He goes on to say that because United and Sunderland “may be able to
offer a full-time move in the negotiations,” they would be near the front of any queue.
Leicester will be keen to ensure Cannon keeps playing regularly, however, with only goalkeeper Viktor Johansson
playing more league minutes at Stoke this season. The struggling Potters have also been boosted by Mark Robins’
arrival as manager, another reason for the struggling Foxes to keep their on-loan striker where he is settled.
Cannon fits bill for Röhl
With just 48 hours left before Cannon’s break clause expires, Leicester has shown little interest in recalling the
forward, thus a transfer for him doesn’t appear likely at this time. Furthermore, a move would be challenging due to
competition from Sunderland and Sheffield United, two teams that are in the running for automatic promotion.
However, Cannon seems to be the type of player Danny Röhl is interested in. As his team looks to the playoffs, the
Wednesday manager acknowledged before the January transfer window that he wanted players at the Premier
League level to arrive and make an immediate effect.
Regarding his club’s November preparations, he told The Star, “I have spoken before about what we need.” “We need
to sign impact players, diverse players, not just players for the team. That’s what we must attempt.
“I said this in the summer that we need such a player from the Premier League clubs to improve the squad. It’s not
always just about convincing the players, you need the full package to look at. To get players from the Premier
League clubs would increase our level.”
