Everton hard luck story continues but Blues must do all they can to change script

The Everton bad luck tale goes on, but the Blues need to make every effort to alter the course.

The Toffees lost against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon despite a fierce and focused defensive performance; this was mostly due to another controversial decision.

The encounter this past weekend was just one more disappointing game for Everton during a campaign beset by them all. This has perhaps been the most turbulent, contentious, and challenging season any Premier League team has ever experienced.

Everything has been overshadowed by a financial issue, which finally prompted a League inquiry and an independent commission’s finding of the Blues’ wrongdoing and imposition of a record ten-point penalty in November.

That came after a US investment group called 777 Partners attempted to take over the club. The takeover raised more concerns than it answered, and it didn’t offer a clear-cut solution to the team’s issues. Furthermore, we have yet to hear whether the takeover will be approved.

In addition, there have been debatable and dubious officiating and referring decisions made, particularly with regard to the usage of VAR, which have cost the Toffees dearly on the field.

There have been so many occasions where decisions have been made that have raised serious issues about the standard of officiating in the Premier League.

For example the decision of the referee in the Merseyside derby to send off an Everton player for two yellow cards and then fail to do so with a Liverpool player for two similar offences.

Then there are the numerous penalty claims that have been denied – for the only Premier League team without a spot-kick so far this season – and the marginal calls in games that constantly seem to go the other way, as they seemed to again on Saturday.

All this creates a tremendous sense of frustration that Everton are having to run up a down escalator while having both their legs tied together!

But despite all of this hardship, the players and management of the Blues must just focus on winning games in order to give themselves the best chance of finishing the season unbeaten.

To be fair to the boss and his subordinates, they have demonstrated an impressive ability to ignore all outside distractions and concentrate thus far. Naturally, that must go on.

But I’m getting more worried that these efforts aren’t producing the desired results, and that it might already be too late if Everton can’t find a way to start scoring goals once more.
