No longer in discussions’: John Percy shares latest update as West Brom search for next manager

The journalist for the Telegraph stated on X that the Baggies had terminated their negotiations with the Swiss manager and will now search for other candidates. Carlos Corberan departed West Brom to join La Liga team Valencia last month, leaving the team without a manager. Wicky is reportedly in advanced negotiations to become the Baggies’ next manager, according to Percy. After speaking with Baggies executives in London, the former manager of Basel and Young Boys became their top priority. Wicky left Young Boys in March of last year, making him a free agent. The hiring was believed to be quite near, and the 47-year-old manager was eager to take over the Championship team.

Wicky was unable to put together his ideal backroom crew, hence West Brom and he are no longer in contact. The Baggies will consider other choices. On January 12, Alan Nixon, a journalist with The Sun, asserted that Tony Mowbray was becoming a viable alternative for the Baggies. He stated that Mowbray has spoken with Albion officials and is prepared to take command at the Hawthorns, provided his health concerns are resolved. Mowbray is having a vacation from football after quitting Birmingham City last season for health reasons. The 61-year-old was promoted to the Premier League in 2008 while managing West Brom.

The Birmingham Mail, however, has denied the allegation and stated that Mowbray is not being considered for the Albion management position. According to reports, Andrew Nestor, West Brom‘s sporting director, is in charge of hiring and makes extensive use of data and analytics. Therefore, Mowbray, a more traditional manager, shouldn’t be involved.West Brom will need to consider other choices, even if Wicky is known for being a coach who can operate in a contemporary football club framework. Given that the team has a real possibility of qualifying for the playoffs this season, they must make the appropriate appointment.
