Johnathan Hankins suffers high ankle sprain in win
According to Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins of the Dallas Cowboys sprained his high ankle during the third quarter of the team’s 33-13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
“He’s got a high ankle [sprain],” Jones stated on Monday on 105.3 The Fan. “We don’t anticipate it being very bad. He will be examined more closely to determine the precise nature of the issue at hand. As the day progresses, we will learn more.”
Hankins was injured during Philadelphia’s opening drive of the second half when several players landed on his ankle, bending him backwards after a D’Andre Swift six-yard gain. The Cowboys’ training staff attended to Hankins on the field, and he cautiously left the field. He would not come back to win.
Hankins was observed leaving the locker room following the game limp-free and without a walking boot.
Given that Hankins has expertise rushing the passer and defending the run, his probable loss for the remainder of the season could be significant. In his eleventh season in the NFL, he has recorded 26 tackles and three sacks in 13 games.
Neville Gallimore and rookie first-round pick Mazi Smith covered for him at defensive tackle, and in the second half, Osa Odighizuwa also played a bit more of a leading role. Should Hankins be out for some time, Smith and Gallimore will have to shoulder the majority of the run defence responsibilities in the upcoming weeks.
Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., head coach Mike McCarthy will give a speech while the training team continues to examine Hankins more closely.
