Sheffield United target bargain deal for out-of-contract 27-year-old

Sheffield United target bargain deal for out-of-contract 27-year-old

Reporter Alan Nixon claims that Sheffield United is trying to sign Hertha Berlin full-back Jonjoe Kenny on a low-cost contract.

In order to rebuild their ranks after being relegated from the Premier League, Sheffield United had a busy summer transfer window. It appears that SUFC will have another busy month.

The Blades are in need of further reinforcements before the window slams shut on February 3rd. Several names have been linked as Chris Wilder attempts to cover gaps, many of which have been exposed by injury.

Now, claims of a new Bramall Lane target have emerged.

Writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon states that Sheffield United are interested in signing full-back Jonjoe

Kenny. The former Everton man, who now plays in Germany with 2. Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin is out of contract

in the summer and the Blades are eyeing a bargain deal to bring him back to England this month.

Nixon adds a cheap deal is possible and the offer of a long-term deal could prove attractive given his contract

situation on the continent.

Kenny has been with Hertha since July 2022, returning to Germany after a year-long loan with FC Schalke in

2019/20.

More on Kenny

In Germany, however, Kenny has flourished and found form on the right. Playing as a full-back, wing-back, or even

on the right of the back three, the 27-year-old has contributed five goals and 14 assists in 83 games, including a goal

and six assists in his 17 2. Bundesliga appearances this season. Many Sheffield United supporters will recognise

Kenny from his previous time on these shores. He played 50 times in the Premier League with Everton after

graduating from their academy and spending time on loan at Oxford United, Wigan Athletic, and Celtic.

The current SUFC options

Sheffield United have had loan man Alfie Gilchrist starting at right-back this season. He’s been a solid performer

from Chelsea and there are cover options already.

Jamie Shackleton can play both midfield and right back, and Femi Seriki has shown promise. While promising

player Sai Sachdev has been absent for a long time, Sam Curtis has returned from his loan at Peterborough United.

After Gilchrist’s loan expires in the summer, there might be room for Kenny to take centre stage. However, his

acquisition can make things a bit crowded for the time being.

But it’s possible that SUFC manager Wilder intends to move Gilchrist central, where he spent a large portion of his

junior career, following Harry Souttar’s injury. A right-back like Kenny might not hurt things if that’s the case.
