Coventry City match reaction from CoventryLive, as opposition manager Danny Rohl believes his Sheffield Wednesday team should have beaten the Sky Blues.
Danny Rohl felt that Sheffield Wednesday “deserved” to overcome Coventry City after “dominating” their FA Cup third round match against their Championship opponents at the CBS Arena.
It is true that the Sky Blues were forced to defend a fragile 1-0 lead late in the game and eventually conceded an equaliser deep in stoppage time to take the tie to extra time before being decided on penalties, with Frank Lampard’s men progressing to the fourth round of the competition after a 4-3 shootout win.
“Big credit to my team for coming back again; we need to win this game,” stated German coach Rohl. “We deserved to win this game, especially in the second half when we dominated the game. We dominate the game, and we get into really excellent circumstances in the final third, but having only three shots on goal is insufficient for everything we do.”
Indeed, the match stats did not exactly back up what Rohl saw with his own eyes, with Wednesday edging possession with 53 percent of the ball compared to 47 percent for Coventry overall, while the Owls managed seven attempts on goal, including only one shot on target, compared to the Sky Blues who had 12 attempts, three of which were on target.
Frank Lampard’s side also squandered two golden opportunities to double their lead in the second half, when Ellis Simms fired too close to the keeper and Victor Torp’s follow-up from the rebound was blocked, while Jack Rudoni had what appeared to be a perfectly good goal from a corner disallowed for foul.
