Luke Williams | We were beaten by the better side on the night
After Swansea City were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup by Southampton at St Mary’s, Luke Williams conceded his side had been beaten by the stronger team on the night.
The Swans were defeated in the third round tie, as a Kamaldeen Sulemana goal and a brace from teenager Tyler Dibling earned the Saints a meeting with Burnley in the next round.
The Swans’ head coach acknowledged their team’s poor performance, but attributed it to the superiority of their Premier League opponents. “I think it was too much for us tonight, we were outclassed by a stronger side,” he said. “I’ve got no complaints about the effort made by the players. We were guilty of some sloppy play, and of course the opposition forced that and capitalised on it.”
“But the reality is that we were unable to deal with the opposition when they attacked us, and we were unable to create significant scoring opportunities.
“We did not manage to cause them enough problems.”
One bright spot for Swansea was Josh Ginnelly’s return to the pitch after rupturing his Achilles against Sheffield Wednesday in September 2023.
The winger came on as a late substitution on the south coast, and while there is still much work to be done, Williams was thrilled to receive his first chance to witness the former Hearts star on the pitch.
“Gino’s return to fitness was a reward for his and the medical staff’s hard work,” said Williams. “He is a player we hope to see more of and include in the squad more often. He has a lot of talent and has shown real mental strength to come through all the setbacks he has had. We were very pleased to see him out on the pitch, now we have to make sure we keep taking
