‘Have to win’ – Sheffield Wednesday boss makes Owls claim after Coventry City defeat
The manager of Sheffield Wednesday, Danny Röhl, believed his team deserved to defeat Coventry City in the FA Cup
match on Saturday night.
Liam Kitching gave the home team the lead in the first half, but the Owls rallied to tie the score again. Anthony
Musaba scored late to force extra time, but after another half and half, the game was settled by a shootout.
Wednesday lost the competition at the third round stage in a manner reminiscent of their recent elimination from
the Carabao Cup to Brentford, and Olaf Kobacki, who had just recovered from an injury, had his game-winning
penalty saved.
For Röhl, he praised the general play of his side, but once again spoke about their work in the final third – insisting
that they weren’t going to be able to win games with ‘just two shots on target’.
He subsequently told The Star, “I think a big credit to my team for coming back again.” “We deserve to win this
game, so we must win it. I believe that in the second half, we had the ball, controlled the game, and dominated it. We
had some very fantastic situations up until the last third, but two shots on goal is insufficient for everything we’re
doing. This is a huge, huge portion.
“To come to Coventry and dominate the game like this, it shows where we are at the moment. But we lost, and this is
the cup. I think we should’ve decided this game before the shootout, because then it’s 50/50. All in all we can take a
lot of positives from this game but I’m a little bit sad about the result.”
As the January transfer window comes to an end, it is practically a given that Röhl will make a number of changes as
the Owls focus on their match against Leeds United next weekend in an attempt to get back to winning ways.
