As they attempt to avoid relegation in their first season back in the top flight, Kieran McKenna’s team has already made a statement of intent in the January window by signing
former Everton star Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta last week. Meanwhile, highly-regarded winger Jaden Philogene arrived at Portman Road from Aston Villa on Wednesday
in a £21 million deal, just six months after returning to his boyhood club.
The Tractor Boys are reportedly chasing a deal to recruit Lyon’s two-time Premier League winner Nemanja Matic, which might allow them to add some experience to their
midfield ranks.
This season, Matic has made 13 appearances for Les Gones in Ligue 1, as Pierre Sage’s team attempts to qualify for the Champions League.
Ipswich will have competition from Serie A teams like Napoli, Florentina, and Como in their attempt to recruit the 36-year-old, according to a report by Florian Plettenberg.
Matic made his debut at Kosice in Slovakia before joining Chelsea in 2009, when Carlo Ancelotti was the team’s manager.
Matic missed out on a winner’s medal as the team swept to the league title in his first season at Stamford Bridge because he struggled for first-team opportunities in the Blues’
crowded midfield and made just two Premier League appearances.
Before spending four years in the Portuguese top division with Benfica, where he won the 2013 Player of the Year award, Matic spent the following season on loan at feeder club
Vitesse.
After rejoining the Blues the following season, he went on to make over 150 appearances across all competitions and win the Premier League twice.
In a rumored £40 million signing, Matic rejoined Jose Mourinho at Manchester United after leaving Chelsea for the second time.
Prior to joining Lyon, the former Serbian international played for Roma and Rennes after leaving Old Trafford in 2022.
At the end of the upcoming season, his present contract with the Parc Olympique Lyonnais is scheduled to expire.
