- Ipswich are reportedly eyeing a move for a two-time Premier League winner
- Kieran McKenna’s side have already made two signings in the January window
A former Premier League winner is allegedly in talks to return to England with Ipswich.
Kieran McKenna’s side has already made a statement of purpose in the January window, hoping to avoid relegation in their first season back in the top flight.
Last Monday, the club agreed to recruit former Everton player Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta.
Meanwhile, highly-rated winger Jaden Philogene joined Portman Road from Aston Villa for £21 million on Wednesday, barely six months after returning to his boyhood club.
The Tractor Boys are reportedly looking to add some expertise to their midfield ranks by signing two-time Premier League winner Nemanja Matic from Lyon.
Matic has made 13 Ligue 1 appearances for Les Gones this season as Pierre Sage’s side strives for a Champions League position.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Ipswich will compete with Serie A sides Napoli, Florentina, and Como for the 36-year-old’s signature.
Matic began his career with Slovakian club Kosice before joining Chelsea in 2009 under Carlo Ancelotti.
Matic battled for first-team opportunities in Chelsea’s packed midfield during his first season, making only two Premier League games and losing out on a winner’s medal as the club surged to the league title.
Matic played the following season on loan at feeder club Vitesse before spending four years in the Portuguese top division with Benfica, where he was voted league Player of the Year in 2013.
The following season, he returned to the Blues, where he made over 150 appearances in all competitions, including two Premier League titles.
After leaving Chelsea for the second time, Matic reconnected with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United for an estimated £40 million.
Since leaving Old Trafford in 2022, the former Serbia international played for Roma and Rennes before joining Lyon.
His current contract with the Parc Olympique Lyonnais is slated to expire at the end of next season.
