O’Brien emerged as a top coaching prospect this offseason after leaving the New England Patriots following a terrible 2023 season. Ohio State hired him as their next offensive coordinator, although other programs pursued the 56-year-old. On Friday, O’Brien was formally hired as the head coach at Boston College, leaving Ohio State without an offensive coordinator. In 2022, the Buckeyes scored 44.2 points per game, which was the second-best mark in collegiate football. However, they dropped to 30.5 points per game last season, their first with Brian Hartline as play-caller.
The Buckeyes lacked a first-round quarterback, as Kyle McCord only threw 24 touchdowns, less than C.J. Stroud’s total from the previous season. McCord has now transferred, and Ohio State signed former Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Will Howard through the transfer portal. Howard scored 24 passing touchdowns and nine rushing touchdowns in 12 games last season.
According to 247Sports, UCLA Bruins head coach Chip Kelly and Toledo Rockets head coach Jason Candle are the leading options replacing Bill O’Brien. Kelly, a pioneer of the hurry-up, spread offense, guided the Bruins to an 8-5 record last season. He is also a prospective candidate for the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator position.
Meanwhile, Candle has spent the last eight seasons with the Rockets. Candle, the two-time MAC Coach of the Year, had a 65-35 record at Toledo. In three seasons under Candle, quarterback DeQuan Finn has 63 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.
