Saudi League CEO asked about reduced investment in Newcastle United
Mike Ashley sold the Magpies to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in October 2021, and Eddie Howe was named manager a month later. The owners of Newcastle have also made investments in tennis and golf, and they own shares in several Saudi clubs, including Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Ettifaq, and Al-Qadisiyah. The Spanish media have had the opportunity to interview officials and some players from the Saudi teams in preparation for Real Madrid’s matchup with Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
Omar Mugharbel was interviewed by El Mundo to discuss the development of the Saudi Pro League after Cristiano Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in January 2023. The Portuguese star has been followed to the Middle East by a number of well-known European players. After speaking with Omar Mugharbel about the Saudi Pro League’s future plans, El Mundo brought up the fact that Newcastle’s owners had made more investments in Saudi Arabia and less outside, like with the Magpies.
“That is another department, it is not the league’s responsibility,” he responded. “However, I can say that there is no lack of investment in the league, and it will remain that way for the 2034 World Cup.” The goal is to establish an industry and boost its expansion in our nation.
