Manager admits his £2 million Celtic capture only needs to improve in one key area.
Erol Bulut, Cardiff City’s coach, is delighted with David Turnbull’s impact but believes the £2 million deadline-day transfer from
Scottish Premiership winners Celtic must improve without the ball.
Cardiff’s signing of Celtic’s Scotland international surprised some in Glasgow, which is a testament to their successful deadline day business.
David Turnbull was not a certain starter under Brendan Rodgers. With seven Premiership goals in nine starts, the best long-range
shot north of the border was still a key element of a Hoops club trying to secure another league crown from a resurgent Rangers.
And, with Cardiff still in the play-offs, the Scotland international may be a game-changer for Bulut’s squad. Especially if he can add off-the-ball effectiveness to his outstanding possession skills.
Celtic sell David Turnbull to Cardiff City
“I think defensively, even last week, he did a good job,” Bulut told Wales Online. Turnbull played over half an hour
off the bench on his Cardiff debut in the 1-0 win against Watford.
“He ran a lot backwards and won a lot of balls. Perhaps he needs to add more to his defensive work. But last week, he did a lot of high-intensity runs.
“(Turnbull) spent three years with Celtic in the Scottish league. He is 24 and has experience.
He appeared in several games, scoring and assisting on numerous goals. In the offensive section, he will show us attempts to score or score himself.
“He can read the game and has excellent passing accuracy and ball control. He can be quick and slow as needed, and he can handle both sides. He’ll be quite effective for us.”
Cardiff still in with a shot at promotion
Celtic star Chris Sutton, in particular, was left with more questions than answers following Turnbull’s somewhat unexpected resignation. Reo Hatate, who has kept him out of the Hoops XI for the past two years, is currently out of action for several weeks.
