Birmingham City transfer news as they confirm that defender s joined Blackburn Rovers on loan.
Birmingham City have permitted Dion Sanderson to leave the club on loan in the January and join Blackburn Rovers, where he reunites with former boss John Eustace. Centre half Sanderson has been ultimately fourth choice in his position in the first half of this season under Chris Davies and has been allowed to depart in order to secure more minutes.
That, ironically, means moving up a division, and Sanderson arrives at Ewood Park with Rovers having enjoyed a largely excellent first half of the campaign under Eustace which has placed them very much in play-off contention. They lost Harry Pickering shortly before Christmas to injury, though, and required cover at the back of their own.
Sanderson joined Blues on loan initially, from Wolverhampton Wanderers, under Eustace in 2022 and he excelled alongside fellow loanee Krystian Bielik to ensure Blues enjoyed a comfortable season in the Championship. He made his move a permanent one the summer following and signed for Eustace again in doing so, but the boss was relieved of his duties in September 2023.
Bielik has been joined by Ben Davies and Christoph Klarer this season and boss Davies has called on all three most recently, but Sanderson by comparison has been out of the picture; indeed his only minutes in League One this season came on the opening day of the season in the draw to Reading, and then as a late substitute when Blues conceded late and were held by Northampton Town.
Other than that, Sanderson’s only minutes have come in the EFL Cup – he was red carded in the win at Charlton Athletic – and in the EFL Trophy. The defender’s last outing was in the 2-1 win at Exeter City in the last round of the Trophy, a month ago. A move away from St Andrew’s this month was always likely and he has hooked up again with Eustace.
It’s expected that Blues, who also have loaned out Brandon Khela to Bradford City this month, will now explore the option of adding their own defensive cover this month.
