Three males have been arrested in connection with the incident that resulted in the evacuation of Glasgow Caledonian University and the cancellation of a Celtic FC concert at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
A major Scottish bus station was evacuated earlier on Wednesday following the discovery of a ‘potentially suspicious material’. Police stated that three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident at Buchanan Bus Station.
However, it was later revealed that the item, which was destroyed in a controlled explosion, was not suspicious, and the trio were arrested in connection with offensive weapons. The Royal Navy bomb team raced to Glasgow’s city centre at 1.10pm on Wednesday, November 20, and remained for several hours.
Glasgow Caledonian University was also evacuated, and neighbouring roads were closed as police examined the situation. Here’s what we know so far.
What happened?
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) confirmed that the bus station was closed. A spokeswoman added, “Apologies to everyone, Buchanan Bus Station is temporarily closed to passengers while police deal with an emergency occurrence.
“There is no access to the station for passengers, and no buses enter or exit the station. We will notify you when the station reopens. I apologise for the inconvenience.
The force stated: “Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident at Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow, which was reported at 1.10pm today. EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) are on the scene, and investigations are ongoing.”
Are the adjacent roads still closed?
Police stated earlier this afternoon that Killermont Street, which runs around the rear of the bus terminal, was closed to traffic, and pedestrians should avoid the area.Later that afternoon, they stated that three males had been arrested as a result of their initial investigation.
Around 4.47pm, Traffic Scotland announced that a nearby M8 off-slip had been closed owing to an incident. The traffic intelligence service reported that junction 16 on the motorway had been closed, and motorists were urged to avoid that area. However, by 6.33pm, the lanes were open despite the ongoing police situation, and people were advised to check with bus operators if they intended to use public transit.
What else has the incident affected?
Trains were temporarily halted at Queen Street as cops dealt with the incident near the bus station. A representative for ScotRail explained:
“Services had stopped at Queen Street high level for a short period to allow the police to deal with the incident at Buchanan bus station but lines have reopened now.”
Buchanan Galleries told the Record that the centre remained open today, but shoppers were inconvenienced because the car park exit on Killermont Street was closed, forcing motorists to use a separate exit. The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall has an entrance on the same street, and they had to cancel an engagement.
Ticket holders for ‘An Audience with Celtic Legends: Martin O’Neill & Stiliyan Petrov’ were informed that the meet and greet event had been cancelled.
A spokeswoman stated, “Due to circumstances beyond our control, this evening’s event has been cancelled.” All ticket holders will be notified in due course. We are sorry for any trouble this may create.”
