According to new reports, a Sheffield Wednesday player who played a crucial role in the club’s promotion back to the Championship wants to depart in the January transfer window.

The Owls will trade league commitments for FA Cup duties on Saturday evening, travelling to Coventry City for an all-Championship third-round showdown.

Admittedly, the competition does not take precedence this season, with Wednesday expecting to launch a serious playoff run, lying 10th in the table with 20 games remaining. Last weekend’s dismal 2-2 draw at home to Millwall saw sloppy points wasted, but Danny Rohl’s side remains in a strong position.

The current transfer window may provide an opportunity for the Owls to enhance their squad, should Rohl believe that more additions will improve his team’s chances of returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2000. According to one rumor, they have made a move for Brisbane Roar forward Thomas Waddingham, who has been characterized as a “teen sensation”.

However, there is a risk that Wednesday will lose crucial players before the end of the month, as a recent update suggests.

Influential Sheffield Wednesday stalwart wants to leave

According to a fresh claim from Football Insider, Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Michael Ihiekwe is “keen” to leave the club this month, with “interest” from clubs in the Championship and League One.

The 32-year-old is claimed to be “in search of regular first-team football” after dropping down the defensive pecking order under Rohl this season. The Owls are “open” to allowing him to leave, believing they have sufficient depth in that area of the pitch.

It’s unclear whether Rohl is pleased to see Ihiekwe leave, or whether it’s only those in charge at the club, but losing him would have an impact on Wednesday’s squad depth between now and the conclusion of the season.

The experienced defender has been an impressive servant since joining Hillsborough from Rotherham United in 2022, assisting the Owls earn promotion back to the Championship in his first season, following historic League One playoff triumphs over Peterborough United and Barnsley.

Granted, Ihiekwe has only made three league starts this season, limiting his playing time, but he has consistently been a reliable performer, with journalist Alex Miller remarking on one performance: “There are a couple of instances that could have been hairy early on. On several occasions, he threw his body for the cause, with a crucial block at 68 minutes. A fighter on an afternoon that required them.”
