Former Celtic midfielder James McCarthy has been sighted at New Douglas Park promoting Hamilton Accies’ third kit. The Irishman appeared to be released by Celtic in the summer, but the club made no official announcement.
Hamilton tweeted a photo of McCarthy at the Championship club.
The former Ireland international had been out of the first-team picture since October 2022, and it appeared that the midfielder was not a good fit for Celtic at that point in his career.
McCarthy joined Celtic as a free agent from Crystal Palace in 2021. The player signed a four-year contract, but after three seasons, his information was removed from the club’s website, and it appeared he had been dismissed, despite no official announcement.
It’s unfortunate that James’ Celtic career never took off, but he did contribute to a good two seasons. McCarthy was important in Giorgos Giakoumakis’ late winner against St Johnstone during Ange’s second season. The player closed down what appeared to be a lost cause, allowing the Greek striker to score the winning goal.
McCarthy may have taken on a coaching role since leaving Celtic, as the player looks to have taken a step back from playing without officially retiring. Despite this, McCarthy is still listed as a Celtic player on Transfermarkt, even though the club’s official website does not.
