The Tigers are looking to secure a late addition to their squad ahead of the 2025 season.
The Castleford Tigers have set their sights on Salford Red Devils prop Jack Ormondroyd. Rugby League Live can confirm that the Tigers have made an official enquiry to sign the forward, with the Reds on the verge of having to sell players to overcome their current financial situation.
Super League clubs were contacted on Wednesday to notify them of Salford’s current condition, with the Reds not only being told they need to slash their operational expenses by £700,000, but also that they require a cash injection to protect their short-term existence.
Salford hopes to achieve this through external investment, and conversations are ongoing now. However, the Reds have conceded that if negotiations do not materialize soon, they would have to cash in on their players to avert financial ruin.
Cas has made a move for Ormondroyd, a 33-year-old forward with 96 Super League games. The Tigers, who have been looking for a prop all offseason, have been keeping an eye on happenings at Salford and now intend to recruit the former Leeds Rhinos prop before the 2025 season begins.
With the Tigers under the payroll cap, they will be viewed as a preferred buyer if Salford is forced to sell, and if Salford’s investment negotiations fail, the deal appears to be on track.
Ormondroyd made his name with Featherstone, and his performances earned him a move to Leeds Rhinos in 2017. After two seasons in Headingley, they returned to Featherstone before moving to Salford in 2020. He has made 89 appearances with the Reds.
Salford has received indications of interest from over half of the Super League clubs. Hull FC wants Marc Sneyd and Deon Cross, while Love Rugby League announced on Thursday that Nene Macdonald has attracted attention from clubs, including Hull KR.
