Development: Club now willing to let goalkeeper leave after talks with Leeds United
According to a recent rumor, Leeds United may now have an open window to sign one of their January targets as Daniel Farke’s team attempts to secure their place atop the Championship.
Leeds is dominating the Championship.
Leeds has recovered better this season after losing in the play-off final the previous year and having their team dismantled during the summer transfer window. Even though back-to-back draws have reduced their lead at the top to just one point, Farke’s team is still on track to win the championship at the end of the season. Burnley and Sheffield United are fighting for their own automatic promotion spot.
All of this is subject to the disclaimer that the team has had serious midfield injuries, with Illia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu both missing significant portions of the season due to knee issues. However, Illan Meslier, the goalie, is another issue for them. Despite facing the third fewest shots on goal (among goalkeepers playing more than 10 games), the Frenchman has had a difficult season and is currently ranked ninth for save percentage and 25th out of 40 keepers for goals stopped in England’s second division thus far this season.
After his team lost to Hull City by two points due to two mistakes, Farke was blunt in his post-match remarks. Farke said BBC Radio Leeds, “It’s safe to say he had a poor game against Hull and his mistake for the second goal was decisive.” He could have and ought to have performed better in a handful of the games. You would think that a guy of his caliber, even playing at his best, could have saved it in one or two of the strikes. They now have a better chance of finding someone to replace the Frenchman.
The Leeds transfer target is free to depart.
According to reports earlier in the transfer season, the Elland Road team had talks about signing River Plate’s Conan Ledesma. Now, a new development has stoked the flames even more. This comes as River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo is reportedly open to letting Ledesma go this winter in pursuit of first team football, according to Pasion Futbol [via Sport Witness]. The 31-year-old goalkeeper has only made four appearances this season.
