Aston Villa’s possible transfer is called into question as a substitute appears.

This January transfer window, Aston Villa defender Kosta Nedeljkovic was linked to a loan move to Valencia, a struggling team in Spain. However, the possibility of that move happening has been called into question after the relegation-threatened La Liga team investigated a loan move for Bournemouth full-back Max Aarons.

Aarons, a former Norwich City defender, cost almost £12 million to transfer to the Vitality Stadium from the Canaries in the summer of 2023. However, he has only made three appearances under Andoni Iraola this season, with the Cherries dominating the Premier League. There have only been 85 minutes of football played in those three appearances, including one start.

According to reports, Bournemouth and Valencia, who are now managed by former West Brom manager Carlos Corberan but are firmly rooted in a fight to stay in Spain’s top division while four points outside of safety, have reached a deal over the right-back.
In the first case, it is likely to mean that Nedeljkovic won’t be going to the Mestalla if the above deal is confirmed. Valencia and Bournemouth have agreed to loan Aarons, and the Spanish team will have the option—but not the obligation—to sign the defender in the summer for a fixed fee of €9 million.

In order to give the teenager, who joined the team a year ago after joining from Red Star Belgrade in the summer, more regular exposure to first-team minutes—something Villa cannot provide or afford—Unai Emery has hinted that he may go on loan this month.

“With Kosta we have a plan,” Emery stated last week regarding the right-back. “We opted to keep him in the squad for the first half of the season after first deciding to use him for the preseason. It is difficult for him to get the minutes, confidence, and comfort he needs to play, in my opinion.

“Letting him leave on loan is one choice. We are also looking for something for the right side in case he goes on loan, as we had anticipated in the previous weeks.”

In addition to having Enzo Barrenechea on loan at Valencia, Villa is looking for another defender and is interested in Oscar Mingueza of Celta Vigo. The Argentine has made ten appearances for his country this season after being called up.
