NFL Takes $21,856 From 2 Seahawks Defenders

The Seattle Seahawks lost 41-35 to the Dallas Cowboys after a fierce, hard-fought battle in Week 13. Now, two Seattle defenders will hit the field with lighter wallets than they had last week as the Seahawks prepare for a pivotal Week 14 NFL West matchup

against the San Francisco 49ers. This is because Seahawks defensive backs Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs were fined by the NFL for their involvement in a brawl with opponent tight end Jake Ferguson following the Cowboys game.

Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs Were Fined By the NFL

The Seahawks’ Thursday Night Football loss to the Cowboys featured two positive moments.Despite their current three-game losing run, the club played with aggression and a strong sense of resolve. Geno Smith and the offence had their best game in a while.

The NFL claims that two Seahawks went a bit too far in their “fighting,” even though the last portion was a positive indication that the squad is still vying for a postseason berth.

With the Seahawks leading by eight points at the end of the third quarter, Dak Prescott found tight end Jake Ferguson for a 14-yard gain to move Dallas to the Seattle 6-yard line.

The pushing and shoving began after the play when Ferguson popped up and started signalling first down, right in the face of Quandre Diggs, who shoved the TE in the upper chest/head area. After teammates separated them, Mandela Adams continued after Ferguson, and after they came face to face, the veteran safety slapped the Cowboys player in the facemask. On Saturday, December 9, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero tweeted that the NFL fined Adams and Diggs $10,927 each for unsportsmanlike conduct. Ferguson, who started the altercation and kept it going throughout, was also fined, but only $5,812, most likely because he didn’t throw a punch, shove, or slap like the Seahawks’ defensive backs did.

The Seahawks Safeties Have Struggled This Season

Seattle’s scoring defence, which is rated 25th in the NFL, has allowed the 12th-highest amount of throwing yards (2,813). That could be difficult to accept given how much attention rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon and second-year Pro Bowl cornerback Riq Woollen receive for their outstanding play.

However, Quandre Diggs, Jamal Adams, and Julian Love’s subpar play at safety has occasionally caused the Seahawks defense’s back end to falter.

This safety trio is one of the lowest-ranked units in the NFL, per their PFF grades. Not a single one of these players shows up in the top 40 at their position. Adams is rated the highest at No. 43 in the league with a 64.7 overall grade. Love is only slightly behind Adams at 64.1, and Diggs is all the way down at 77 with a 53.9 grade.

The secondary’s difficulties are a major factor in the team’s lack of wins since Sunday, Nov. 12. And that’s what might finally spell the end for the Seahawks when they play the 49ers in Week 14. The Niners offence could once again be unstoppable if the safeties are unable to effectively balance protecting against over-the-top shots (Brandon Aiyuk had a 28-yard touchdown reception) and aiding in stopping the run (Christian McCaffrey carried for 114 yards previous game).
