Paul Mullin has been urged to become “p*ssed off” more frequently at Wrexham because he looks to lack confidence at League One level.

What happened?

The 30-year-old forward has played a significant role in the Red Dragons’ rapid ascension from the National League to the third tier of English football. He has 109 goals for the Welsh team in 165 matches, although just four have been recorded this season.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mullin has battled for consistency as a frequent replacement, unable to build on his magnificent score in a 2-1 victory against Blackpool on Boxing Day.

WHAT MORRELL SAID:

Mullin, a favorite of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has a strong pedigree. However, legendary Wrexham striker Andy Morrell explains on the Fearless In Devotion podcast why he is currently struggling. “He needed a goal, and then he got one, he hit a joke of a goal [against Blackpool] and you think ‘here we go’, and then it just doesn’t seem to be happening for him,” he says. He’s playing quite a ways away from Ollie Palmer, and it doesn’t appear to be working as well as it did in past seasons.”

    Did you know?

Morrell went on to add, “I witnessed him get thrown into a barrier at Barnsley and his response; he came back on and was irate. He was irritated, yet he sprinted faster than I’d ever seen him go; he was closing in behind, posing a threat, and throwing himself forward. He seems pissed off.

“That’s the Mullin we know and love; he gets sunk in and causes problems for the defenders. For half an hour, I assumed he was back, but we didn’t see him again in the next game. I’m not sure what it is. Is it simply confidence at this level? He can score; he scores fantastic goals in plenty, so fingers crossed it happens again and he comes good and scores on a regular basis.”

    What is next for Wrexham?

Mullin hopes to help Wrexham achieve a historic promotion in 2024-25, although they won’t play again until January 16 against Shrewsbury. During the winter transfer window, the Red Dragons were said to be looking for another striker, perhaps adding more firepower to Phil Parkinson’s side.
