Leeds loan agreed, striker target signs – Wrexham’s dream January transfer window

Leeds loan agreed, striker target signs – Wrexham’s dream January transfer window.

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin

Wrexham are looking for new players in the January transfer window, as they attempt to maintain their good record in League 1 and clinch a third consecutive promotion.

Wrexham remain in contention for promotion from League One, making them a viable candidate for the January transfer window.

The club’s Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have given manager Phil Parkinson the green light to spend big this month. The competition for the two automatic promotion berths in the third division seems to be between four teams.

Birmingham City, the big spenders, presently top the standings at the midway mark, with Wycombe Wanderers two points behind.Wrexham is in third position, equal in points with Wycombe but with a poorer goal difference.

Huddersfield Town have also expressed interest in the competition due to their recent success. Wrexham’s summer investment in players like Ollie Rathbone and Mo Faal has resulted in few areas for development in January.

However, considering the ambitious club’s chances of achieving an unprecedented third successive promotion, it would not be shocking if they smashed their transfer record once more. Wrexham have struggled to produce goals, with star striker Paul Mullin out of form after back surgery in the summer.

There are also other squad difficulties to handle, since some players’ contracts are coming to an end. With this in mind, here are three scenarios that might result in the ideal transfer window for the club.

Sheffield Wednesday's Michael Smith

Michael Smith, a striker for Sheffield Wednesday, was one of Parkinson’s primary targets during the transfer window last summer. The Championship team’s choice to keep its best player at Hillsborough appears to have paid off so far this season.

The 33-year-old has scored five goals for the Owls, mainly coming off the bench. However, with his contract scheduled to expire this summer, reconsidering the transfer this month may be a win-win for everyone concerned.

Smith would fit seamlessly into Parkinson’s scheme and may be the perfect companion to spark Mullin’s scoring spree. Ollie Palmer may find himself in a difficult situation.

The former AFC Wimbledon striker has put in a lot of effort for Wrexham up front, but his goal total has dropped. It would not be surprising if the team tried to sign a forward with Championship experience to help them advance to the next level.

Sam Dalby’s situation was settled.

Despite their dearth of goals, Wrexham have a striker who is on fire, although on loan. Sam Dalby has had a terrific first half of the season with Dundee United, and he now leads the Scottish Premiership in goals scored with 10.

Parkinson now faces a difficult choice on whether to recall the striker during the January transfer window, since his contract expires in the summer. The 25-year-old has indicated his desire to remain with United, who are apparently looking to sign him permanently.

The manager has a few tricks in his sleeve, including the prospect of reintroducing Dalby into the fold. For the time being, continuing at Tannadice on loan for the remainder of the season may be the best option for both the player and United.

For Wrexham, recalling Dalby in the short term might encourage United to make a permanent deal for the forward in January. This would also enable the Red Dragons to receive a transfer fee.

Mullin has more than shown his value at Wrexham. The Scouse striker is a club icon thanks to his goal-scoring achievements and is revered by co-owners Reynolds and McElhenney.

However, with the long term in mind, adding a second striker during this transfer window would be the cherry on top. Increased competition may also inspire Mullin to regain his scoring form.

Joe Gelhardt of Leeds United has been linked with Wrexham during the January transfer window. The 22-year-old forward is apparently being sought by Hull City.

While a major makeover is not required, bolstering their frontline this month would only help the North Wales club’s hopes of automatic promotion.
