Burnley close talks over free transfer deal for 32-year-old midfielder

Burnley are in talks over a deal to bring former England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey in, according to reporter Alan Nixon.

Burnley are set for a battle for promotion in the second half of this season.

The Clarets are currently 2nd in the Championship table after 26 games and are just a point adrift of Leeds United at the summit. It’s been a strong campaign to date but they want to strengthen still in January.

Scott Parker’s side moved quickly to bring former striker Ashley Barnes back to the club from Norwich City. However, Parker still wants more additions to build on that strong start.

One man who could make the move to Turf Moor is former Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. As reported by Alan Nixon on his PatreonBurnley have an interest in the 32-year-old.

Shelvey has been in Turkey for the last year and a half initially with Rizespor and most recently, Eyupspor. He only made six appearances for the club this season before parting ways with them last week.

Shelvey has an outstanding record at Championship record. Across 70 games in the division, he has scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists.

He’ll arrive at Burnley having not played at this level since 2017, when he was a key player for Newcastle United as they won the league under Rafael Benitez. That season was one of the best of his career as he provided 14 goal contributions from central midfield.

At 32, he is far from finished. As a player who is particularly gifted technically rather than physically, he will have plenty to offer the Clarets as they look to return to the Premier League.

Debut against former rivals?

Burnley’s return to Championship action could be a big one for Shelvey if he arrives.

The Clarets face the visit of fellow promotion hopefuls Sunderland at Turf Moor next Friday night. Sunderland of course, are bitter rivals of the side Shelvey spent seven years with, Newcastle United.

Shelvey never managed to play in a Tyne-Wear derby as the two clubs were never in the same division. However, he would love to get one over Sunderland to give back to the Newcastle fans who supported him for so long.
