Birmingham City weighing up immediate future of player admired by Brentford

Birmingham City boss Chris Davies has said they are ‘speaking’ to Romelle Donovan about his next steps this month.

Birmingham City have seen the attacker return from his loan spell at Burton Albion this winter. He is now back at BCFC but his future is up in the air.

Donovan, 18, has been the subject of ‘long-standing’ interest from Premier League side Brentford, BirminghamLive have reported.

In this latest update regarding his situation at the moment, Davies has told BirminghamLive: “We’re still speaking to Romelle and his support network around what’s the best next step for him because he’s a talented player who has come through the academy, we have a duty of care towards him to get it right and get his future right.

“He’s obviously come back from his loan and has been back at the club training with the under-21s, so we’ll see how the next few weeks go with that.”

Birmingham City plan for Romelle Donovan

Donovan is a player with a lot of potential but he wasn’t able to get much game time at Burton Albion.

He was given the green light to head out the exit door on loan by Birmingham City in the summer to get some experience under his belt.

The Birmingham-born man has since made nine appearances for the Brewers in all competitions, six of which have come in the league, and he chipped in with a single goal.

Donovan has been on the books of the Blues for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks.

He has been a regular for the Midlands outfit at various different youth levels over recent years.

The England youth international penned his first professional contract on his 17th birthday in November 2023 running until June 2026.

Donovan has played 10 times for Birmingham City’s first-team to date.

What now?

It is unlikely that he would be able to break into Davies’ XI if they decided to keep him. Therefore, another temporary exit would probably suit all parties involved.

He needs to be playing matches to help boost his development. It remains to be seen at this stage whether Brentford will firm up their interest with a bid at some point.

Birmingham City are back in action this weekend with an FA Cup third round tie against Lincoln City as they look to keep their momentum going.
