Rangers among six clubs to raise ‘serious concerns’ over SPFL independent review

Rangers are one of six Scottish Premiership teams that have expressed “serious concerns” about

how the recent independent study into the Scottish Professional Football League’s operations was

handled.

In a united letter to the SPFL management, the clubs—which also include Aberdeen, Motherwell,

Livingston, St Johnstone, and St Mirren—demand clarity over the report’s contents. They claim

that only one unidentified team was given the chance to participate in the probe, and that league

executives altered the findings before sending it to SPFL board members.Last month, SPFL

chairman Murdoch McLennan expressed his satisfaction with the conclusions of independent

external auditors Henderson Loggie, saying, “I’m reassured but not complacent.”

The clubs maintain that since this remark “did not reflect the full findings of the report,” it was “highly inappropriate” to make. The assessment was ordered in July following MacLennan’s apology to Rangers and the resolution of a sponsorship issue involving the vehicle business Cinch in the Ibrox club’s favor.”On behalf of SPFL Premiership clubs Aberdeen, Motherwell, Livingston, Rangers, St Johnstone, and St. Mirren, a letter was issued to the SPFL executive in response to the handling of the recent Independent Governance report,” read a joint statement published by the Rangers to the media. The clubs have grave reservations about the independence of the study, its transparency, and the management of the SPFL as a whole.

“The letter asks for complete clarification on a number of matters so that the clubs, who are SPFL shareholders, can decide whether more action is required. Along with providing the SPFL Board with a draft report, SPFL Chairman Murdoch McLennan issued a statement in a hurry that did not include all of the investigation’s conclusions. FurthermoreMembers of the SPFL Board or clubs that are SPFL members were neither informed or given their consent for the statement to be released.

It is highly inappropriate for the SPFL Chairman to have made any public remarks before to the SPFL Board meeting, which is scheduled to examine the contents of the draft report. Since the SPFL Executive received the initial draft of the study and made revisions before giving it to SPFL Board members, the clubs and others have serious concerns about the report’s independence.Only one of the 42 member clubs—aside from those who are currently or were formerly on the SPFL Board—was given the chance to provide feedback on the report’s investigation. The report was paid for by the clubs, however none of the member clubs have received it despite repeated requests from the clubs. The way the Independent Governance study was handled has escalated the clubs’ governance issues. As a result, the SPFL Board and Executive must immediately address these serious and legitimate concerns in order to restore public confidence in the people in charge of our league.
