Sheffield United playing poker in transfer market after Chris Wilder’s “ridiculous” transfer deal admission
Chris Wilder has compared Sheffield United’s search for new signings this window to “a game of poker” as the club waits for its first January arrival at Bramall Lane. The Blades are anxious for new blood to revitalize their promotion campaign in the final 20 games of the season.
Ben Brereton Diaz remains a major target for the Blades as they attempt to negotiate his release from struggling Southampton, while Hamza Choudhury is also on Wilder’s wish list this season. The Blades manager indicated on Wednesday that United were “not a million miles away” from adding to their squad, with conversations underway in the final few days ahead of last night’s FA Cup match against Cardiff.
Speaking after his much-changed side were knocked out of the competition with a 1-0 defeat in front of just over 6,000 spectators at Bramall Lane, Wilder said: “We’ve been talking the last 48 hours constantly, working and trying to progress agreements through.
“I’ve discussed selling teams or loaned out players; they want the best deal while also waiting for bigger bids to come in. “It’s a challenging situation, but we’ve made progress and hope to see results in the next few days before the Norwich game.”If I told you about one of the bargains, you’d think it was ludicrous, but you’ll have to wait. At times, it’s reminiscent of a poker game. But most importantly, we have guys who want to come here. And we have owners and a chief executive who are working hard to get players in, which is good enough for me.”
