Reading manager Noel Hunt has stated that conversations are ‘ongoing’ between the club and Wolverhampton Wanderers about bringing Chem Campbell back to the club.
The 21-year-old scored five goals for the club between August and December, after joining on a short-term loan from Wolves.
Injury kept him out of a farewell encounter against Charlton Athletic, which ended 0-0 two days before his loan expired, but the club is trying hard to bring him back until the end of the season.
The three sides are currently working on a deal while the Wales youth recovers from an injury sustained in the club’s 3-1 victory over Cambridge United on New Year’s Day.
With the transfer market open until February 3, no transaction is required to be completed immediately, though Hunt would undoubtedly want the teenager back in Berkshire and involved as soon as possible, if at all.
“He is getting treatment,” Hunt said on Thursday. “The clubs are still discussing, so we’ll see how things move this week. I know we are working hard behind the scenes, and fingers crossed, we will receive positive news later.”
Supporters are concerned about future departures, after five first-team players were sold in January to fund the club’s short-term operations.
It’s been nine days since the window opened, but no one has left, and Hunt said, “Nothing has arrived at all, which is good news for us.” There will undoubtedly be conversations, but for myself and Brian [Carey], there has been nothing to report home about.
Reading is under embargo because the financial accounts for the 2022/23 season, which were due last year, have yet to be published.
