‘Ridiculous situation’ – Ex-Everton player unrecognisable as new manager makes transfer admission
Tom Davies, a former Everton midfielder, debuted a striking new look on his eagerly anticipated comeback to action. However, following the Scouser’s first appearance since September 30, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder—who rejoined the team only on December 5—advows that if he had been the Blades manager the previous summer, he would have signed Davies regardless.
At the age of 20 years and 60 days, Davies became the youngest captain in Blues history when Marco Silva gave him the armband. Davies had won Everton’s goal of the season award for scoring the team’s first goal against Manchester City on January 2, 2017, while also taking home the awards for Young Player of the Season and Performance of the Season from the same match. He made 179 appearances and scored seven goals for Everton in all before leaving the team as a free agent in the summer of last year after turning down a new contract.
Davies signed a three-year contract at Bramall Lane and made his Sheffield United debut on September 16 against Tottenham Hotspur as the 81st replacement. Prior to missing the remainder of the month due to an unusual thigh injury received during a training session, he also made two appearances off the bench in the 8-0 home loss to Newcastle United and the 2-0 reverse at West Ham United.In the 72nd minute of Sheffield United’s 5-0 home loss against Aston Villa, Davies—the nephew of Alan Whittle, who scored 11 goals in 15 games for Everton during their 1969–1970 League Championship-winning season—finally made a comeback to the field. After another 5-0 thrashing, Paul Heckingbottom, the manager who brought him to South Yorkshire, was sacked.
Upon his return, Davies looked quite different with his precisely cropped hairstyle, which contrasted sharply with his flowing locks. However, his new stylist insisted that he had always been a fan of Davies. “He’s somebody that, if I was here at the start of the season, I would definitely have gone for as well,” Wilder is quoted by Sheff United Way.He was just in a crazy scenario when he suffered an awful accident. It will be fantastic to have him return because of his Premier League experience, composure, and—above all—the fact that he is a talented player who came to the area and wants to succeed.
