B B C Sports Ashley Young’s dream may come true during FA Cup tie between Everton and Peterborough and it would be history-making.
“These are the kind of stories the FA Cup does bring up and it would be another good one.”
“I’m hoping and praying that it could be in the next couple of years,” Ashley Young stated in October of last year. “To play alongside him or play against him would be unbelievable.” Two months ago, the prospect of facing his 18-year-old son in a professional match seemed impossible, yet on Thursday night, Ashley may face Tyler in a battle of the Youngs at Goodison Park. That’s correct. If the scenario plays out, Everton full-back Ashley Young may swap shirts with Peterborough midfielder Tyler Young, making it the first time a father-son combo has faced off in FA Cup history.
Shortly after Everton was drawn against the League One club, Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson commented on the probable father-and-son meeting. “I don’t think it’s ever happened,” he said on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. “Ash has placed me under some pressure there. I’ll have to find a way to incorporate Tyler.” Ferguson added, “It’s a terrific story; we’ll deal with it when it comes up. Ash continues to play; he has had a wonderful career, and Tyler is just getting started. “These are the kind of stories the FA Cup does bring up and it would be another good one.” Before the draw, former Manchester United and Watford winger Young discussed the potential of facing his son.
“Obviously, playing alongside my son would be a dream come true,” he told talkSPORT. “You see LeBron [James] with his son Bronny playing basketball. I finished my assignment; it hadn’t been done since 1980, which is obviously a long time ago.” As previously stated, if Ashley and Tyler play each other in the FA Cup, they will be the first father-and-son team to face off.
