Andy Reid, 65, is currently the oldest active head coach in the National Football League. He addressed the possibility of retiring on Tuesday after the Chiefs‘ game against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. In January, Mike Florio of NBC Sports wrote that the Chiefs had Reid’s possible retirement on their “radar” this winter. Recent rumors have suggested that Reid may retire at the end of the postseason.

The Kansas City Chiefs are unaware of Andy Reid’s thoughts.

Adam Teicher of ESPN reports that Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt stated on Tuesday that Reid has not given their front office any “sense” that he is prepared to retire soon:

Hunt remarked, “I don’t know what he’s thinking.” “I have no idea when he’ll be ready to retire, but I do know he’s really enjoying it and engaged.” However, I have no idea how long it will last. I do hope it will be a long time in the future, but time will tell.

Reid is still available to serve as a coach.

 

Reid did not provide any more details. Teicher‘s report states that Reid stated he is still “ready to go right now” in terms of leading the Chiefs:

Reid remarked, “My mom and dad told me this when they were working,” as the Chiefs got ready to play the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. “You’ll know when it’s time,” they said, and I’m prepared to leave at this moment. Come on, let’s go.

When I was younger, they would tell me that. I view it from the perspective of an inquisitive child like myself. You’ll be able to tell somewhere when it’s appropriate. It’s not the right day.

After another Super Bowl victory, might Reid’s perspective shift?

Even if Reid decided to stand down at the conclusion of the Chiefs season, this is not the day he would retire. On Sunday, Reid still has the Super Bowl to coach.

Reid will decide what happens next.

If Reid is still enjoying coaching, there’s no need to walk away from the dynasty he created. But if tight end Travis Kelce, another Chiefs speculated retirement, happens after the Super Bowl, the dynasty might be upended.
