The Cowboys may choose to bring in a Super Bowl winner to take Dan Quinn’s position.

The Dallas Cowboys are hoping that a well-known figure will take Dan Quinn‘s place as defensive coordinator.

As to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Cowboys are scheduled to interview Mike Zimmer, the former assistant coach of the Minnesota Vikings, and the former head coach of those teams.

On Tuesday, February 6, Pelissero reports, “According to a source, the Cowboys are interviewing former Vikings coach Mike Zimmer for their defensive coordinator position today.”

Mike Zimmer spent seven seasons as the Cowboys’ defensive coach in the past.

The 67-year-old is best known for his recent lengthy career as head coach of the Vikings, where he led the team on the sidelines for eight seasons from 2014 to 2021. Zimmer guided the Vikings to three postseasons in his eight years in Minnesota, including a trip to the NFC Championship Game in 2017.

During Zimmer’s stint in Minnesota, the Vikings never ended a season with fewer than seven victories, and he recorded a 72-56-1 record (.562) while playing for the team. From 2014 to 2021, Minnesota had the tenth-best record in the league.

In addition to his most recent assignment with the Vikings, Zimmer worked as an analyst and consultant for Jackson State, the former collegiate football team of Deion Sanders. Sanders and the Cowboys won a Super Bowl at the end of the 1995 season while Zimmer was the defensive backs coach, making the relationship noteworthy.

 

Zimmer coached for 13 years, from 1994 to 2006, with the Cowboys, spending his final seven seasons as the defensive coordinator. Zimmer also had a lengthy assistant career with the team.

Quinn, who has been the defensive coordinator since the 2021 campaign and just took the head coaching position with the Washington Commanders, is being sought after by the Cowboys.Dallas has finished in the top seven in terms of points allowed over the last three seasons, and in 2021 and 2022, they led the league in forced turnovers.

Dallas is scheduled to speak with former Commanders head coach Ron Rivera, according to NBC Sports’ Michael David Smith.

On Monday, February 5, David Smith stated, “Dan Quinn took over as head coach of the Commanders, replacing Ron Rivera.” Rivera might take Quinn’s position as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. In the next two days, three candidates will have interviews to be the Cowboys defensive coordinator, including Rivera.

Jerry Jones Is Unconcerned About The New Defensive Coordinator for The Cowboys

The Cowboys are looking for a new defensive coordinator, but team owner Jerry Jones is not worried.

In response to Quinn’s departure for their NFC East opponents, Jones brushed off the notion of appointing a new defensive coordinator as a “problem.”

According to the team website, Jones stated on Sunday, “I don’t anticipate that being an issue at all.” “They will be the Cowboys’ coordinator if they accept the position. They would be examining that immediately along with everything that goes with it. If they have aspirations, they are aware that the person who recently departed has the opportunity to become a head coach somewhere.

Although the prospect of appointing a new defensive coordinator at this point in the hiring cycle may seem intimidating, it’s important to remember that Dallas boasts one of the league’s most elite defensive lineups. Pro Bowl players like Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland, and Micah Parsons play for the Cowboys.

The fact that Dallas is going after successful defensive coordinators like Rivera and Zimmer also helps.
