Preston North End sign former Reading FC defender

The 24-year-old made 13 appearances for the Royals on loan from Everton in 2020/21, but failed to establish himself as a regular starter under Veljko Paunovic as the team ended eighth in the Championship.

After spending the previous two years with Plymouth Argyle, the North-East native joins Deepdale on a contract until 2028.

After finishing tenth last year, Paul Heckingbottom’s Lilywhites are 14th in the second tier this season.

Gibson expressed excitement, saying, “I’m delighted.” It’s been a crazy 24-48 hours, but I’m glad to be here. I’m incredibly enthusiastic about the task and can’t wait to get started.

“Over the years, I believe the club has been very stable in the Championship.” It’s a project that I want to take to the next level and try to get into the top six and possibly advance.

“I’m really excited and fired up to get started. I can’t wait to get out there, especially at home, and show the people what I’m capable of.

Manager Heckingbottom stated, “Lewis is a really good defender who we’re delighted to have brought in.”

“We beat out a few teams for his signature, so I believe he’s excited about what he’s getting into here, and we’re excited to welcome him to our group.

“He’s a player who the fans will quickly see is very capable with the ball at his feet, but he’s also someone who just loves to defend and he’s shown that he can do that to a high level in the Championship.”
