Rangers to return for ex-Manchester City striker in summer; four years on from failed bid

Tyrese Campbell, an ex-Manchester City striker, is expected to return to Rangers since his Stoke City contract is coming to an end.

Under former manager Steven Gerrard, the Gers were heavily linked to a January 2020 transfer for the hitman.

Tyrese Campbell was once anticipated to follow suit after Rangers made deals to bring players like Joe Aribo (Charlton) and Calvin Bassey (Leicester City) north of the border.

But after a deal collapsed – Campbell signing a four-year deal at Stoke City instead – reports are claiming that Rangers are mulling over a return for the now 24-year-old.

The Ibrox side has allegedly “revived their interest” in Tyrese Campbell as his Potters contract is coming to an end, according to Football Insider and Wayne Veysey.

With just one Championship goal this season, Stoke’s past four years haven’t quite gone as planned due to injuries and a lack of consistency at the Britannia.

Tyrese Campbell’s season has been hindered thus far by a hip injury, which may cause concern among Rangers fans who are eager to steer clear of signing players with significant injury histories.

Interestingly, the report also claims that Hellas Verona failed in a January bid to sign the striker from Stoke, having a £1m offer turned down with the English side fighting for their Championship lives.

Additionally, Tyrese Campbell has stated in the past that he was on the verge of signing a contract with Rangers prior to signing with Stoke.

The attacker stated in remarks from 2022 that a move appeared to be “going to happen” before receiving guarantees of playing time from former boss Michael O’Neill in the Championship.

Tyrese Campbell responded, “Yes, there were a few instances where a move was going to happen.”

“This was only really during the time before I signed my new contract at Stoke, when I wasn’t really playing.” At nineteen going on twenty, I had to play football.

After acquiring the striker’s services as a youngster, Stoke was forced to pay Manchester City £1.75 million, and Campbell has been a part of the team since 2017.
