Dallas Cowboys are interviewing a veteran NFL head coach for the position of defensive coordinator.
Dan Quinn, the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, was taken by the Washington Commanders on Thursday in order to take over as head coach. With Quinn out for three seasons, the Cowboys now require a defensive play-caller. Dallas has acted swiftly, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the NFC East team will speak with former bench coach Mike Zimmer of the Minnesota Vikings.
It is also rumored that the Cowboys will speak with Ron Rivera, the former head coach of Washington. Rivera’s place among the Commanders was taken by Quinn.
Mike Zimmer: Considering a Possible Comeback to Coaching
After serving as an analyst and consultant at Jackson State until 2022, Zimmer may take the field again the following autumn. The 67-year-old will shortly be interviewed by the Dallas Cowboys. As a defensive assistant, he started his coaching career in 1979 with the Missouri Tigers. In 1981, he moved to Weber State, where he worked as a defensive back and linebacker coach until 1988. In 1989, Zimmer was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Washington State Cougars, a position he held for five years.
In 1994, Zimmer moved to the NFL and joined the Dallas Cowboys as a defensive coach. After winning the Super Bowl in 1995, he switched to coaching defensive backs. In 2000, Zimmer was elevated to defensive coordinator by the Cowboys, as Dallas was giving up 22.6 points per game. Under Zimmer, the defense in 2002 gave up just 16.3 points per game, which was the second-lowest total of the season.
With the same job position, the Illinois native departed for the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. He accepted the DC position with the Cincinnati Bengals after the Falcons’ struggles. From 2008 until 2014, he called defensive plays for Cincinnati. In 2014, he was hired as head coach for the first time by the Minnesota Vikings. As the starting quarterback, Zimmer finished 72-56-1 and qualified for the playoffs three times in eight years.

The Cowboys’ point total per game of 18.5 is the seventh lowest in the NFL. They forced 3,185 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions out of the opposition quarterback. They gave up only 4.2 rushing yards per attempt in contrast. Cornerback DaRon Bland was selected to the first team of the Pro Bowl and made the All-Pro team after leading the league in interceptions with nine and five interception returns.
