Leeds United hold trump card to beat Burnley, Sheffield United and Sunderland to the title

Leeds United hold trump card to beat Burnley, Sheffield United and Sunderland to the title.

Leeds United did not want or expect to start 2025 with consecutive draws. Defending set pieces is still a huge issue, losing them four points against Blackburn Rovers and Hull City.

There are no excuses for Hull’s collapse. They were the architects of their own downfall. When leading 3-1 away from home with less than 10 minutes remaining, title-winning teams do not give up.

“Overall, you have to say it’s a sign of who we are; we’re not the finished product that cruises through this league,” United boss Daniel Farke said after an exciting Yorkshire derby at the MKM Stadium.

Illan Meslier has deservedly faced scathing criticism for his most recent high-profile blunder. His actions presented Farke with a difficult option to make ahead of their next Championship fixture, which is a week from Sunday.

However, statistics imply that the Whites are on track to gain promotion. Farke’s team leads the standings by one point, having lost just one of their past twelve league games. They now have five more points than they had at this stage last season.

All of their promotion opponents won over the weekend, tightening the gap. The top four clubs are currently separated by just three points. The championship race seemed wide open.

But United has one key advantage over Burnley, Sheffield United, and Sunderland. Their goal difference is essentially worth an extra point. It is presently +29, with Burnley the closest contender at +22.

There are suggestions that the Whites will add another striker during the January transfer window. Mergim Berisha, a Hoffenheim attacker, is the latest player linked with a move to Elland Road.

However, after 26 games, United holds the division’s best offensive record (48 goals). The offensive line has enough skill to carry them to the finish line. It’s now a matter of tightening things up at the back so they have the best chance of attaining their promotion objective.
