Philippe Clement props up Rangers manager list as more weight gets added to sack threat
As part of a string of poor away performances under the current manager, the most recent shipwreck occurred at a windy and rainy Easter Road.Although the team is still rebuilding, Clement would find it difficult to defend himself given his track record in comparison to his predecessors in the Rangers hot seat.
Rangers’ problems are exacerbated by the damning Philippe Clement statistic.
When it comes to the large Belgian, the Ibrox supporters are a tough set, and patience is running out. Clement isn’t doing well after 50 league games. When you take into account how many games the previous bosses were in charge of, it just gets worse. Clement is the worst-performing manager in the 3-point era in terms of points per game.
Both Michael Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst failed to reach the 50-league game criteria despite having greater points per game ratios. The great Walter Smith is an exception because, despite having a lower first spell, he consistently won the league title. If he were to give the Gers manager his P45, it would be more than justified given the current away record under Clement and Patrick Stewart.
Is it time to fire Philippe Clement?
Even with the previously mentioned figures, the answer isn’t simple. Why? Rangers have the greatest home record in the league, and Clement is poised to advance to the Europa League knockout rounds for the second consecutive season. He is also undefeated away from home. Since replacing Michael Beale, he has also led Rangers to every domestic cup final, despite losing two games they should have won and by the slimmest of margins due to circumstances beyond his control.
Although the team’s away performance is poor, there have been noticeable improvements in the style of play since the start of the season, particularly in midfield and the final third. It has been demonstrated that the quality drop from the first choice XI and regular starters to the rest is too great, and better reinforcements may make the difference. Clement is doing a lot of things correctly, but how much longer can he continue to justify or get away with the things he is so terribly failing at?
