‘Closing close’ on deadline-day deal to English Championship team for Celtic forward
On the day of the transfer deadline, Celtics manager Brendan Rodgers is expected to permit marginal player Mikey Johnston to leave the team. After returning from a loan stint with Portuguese top team Vitória S.C., the 24-year-old has only made nine appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season. Upon his return, he struggled to make an impression under Rodgers, and it is now understood that Johnston is eager to play regularly for the first team.
And according to rumors, that has now made it possible for the Republic of Ireland international to transfer to West Bromwich Albion, who are vying for promotion in the English Championship. After reportedly going through a physical in the Midlands, the footballer will now sign a contract with Carlos Corberan’s squad that will last until the summer.
The Baggies are now fifth in the English second division, and earlier in the transfer window, they were connected to a move for Liel Abada of the Hoops. Since then, they have added Callum Marshall and Andi Weimann to their attacking lineup, but it is believed that Corberan was keen to add more offensive talent, which is why he pursued the Republic of Ireland player. This was because Jeremy Sarmiento had been loaned to Ipswich Town earlier in January after being recalled by Brighton, and Matt Phillips was sidelined with an injury.
With David Turnbull expected to finalize a permanent move to Cardiff City later today, it appears that the Hoops will be leaving the English Championship for the second time on Deadline Day. However, Johnston’s impending departure does not necessarily mean that his two years remaining in Glasgow are coming to an end due to his loan move to West Brom. It is also believed that there is no loan-to-buy option associated with the move to join the Baggies, as both teams have agreed to a temporary transfer until the summer.
