City match winner Forson’s delight at Coventry heroics
Amankwah Forson’s exploits in Norwich City’s incredible stoppage time comeback against Coventry made headlines and put a smile on few people’s faces.
No one at Carrow Road could have predicted what was about to happen when the Ghanaian international came on in the 84th minute to replace right defender Kellen Fisher.
First, he restored parity with a breathtaking, save-defying curling shot into the upper left corner; second, he scored a thrilling victory in the 95th minute when his deflected effort nestled into the goal after a cutback by Onel Hernandez.
After spending so much time on the outside looking in during his time with Johannes Hoff Thorup’s Norwich club, Forson finally gets his career off the ground. After that wild conclusion to that thrilling win, the midfielder tried his best to articulate his feelings.
This moment beyond explanation. I’m thrilled for the team and the victory. To me, it’s paramount. I cannot forget this moment. It’s a terrific occasion for me,” Forson said.
I’ve been benched for a few games, but the coach finally decided to start me. I thought, ‘Okay, here is the time’. It was just for a few minutes, but I wanted to give my best so everyone understood that I could provide something.
“It was a wonderful feeling to score my first goals for the club; I’m extremely thrilled about it. It was a great event for the club and made the supporters incredibly pleased; I’m really thrilled for this moment. I had two comparable goals like this in Salzburg, but the emotion of this goal means I would consider this one #1.
“I prefer to place myself here because I know the ball will come back every time. Then I had to hit it. The huge men swarmed upon me [in the celebrations]. You cannot even see me!
“I’m genuinely feeling thrilled. I’m extremely, truly delighted for this moment. We needed that because we were down, and it gave the confidence and everything back.”
Forson’s winner took the roof of Carrow Road, causing a symphony of noise that resonated across the city.
The midfielder was pushed by Thorup in front of a rocking Barclay end after the final whistle, and the 21-year-old talked of his delight at relishing the occasion with City’s supporters.
“I think this moment will only boost your confidence and make you even more happy,” Forson remarked post-match. “For the fans and the club too – if you can perform well, then that helps.
“It was absolutely beautiful. I need to rejoice with the fans because they also needed it. We all need to rejoice together. That is why we train. That is why it occurs.
“One thing I know about football is that the game is never done. I can’t describe this team [mentality] because if the whistle has not gone, then we are not done.”
