Philippe Clement Rangers interrogation revealed as Ibrox chief admits to previous ‘short-sighted’ appointments

Alastair Johnston, the former chairman of the Rangers and non-executive board, has disclosed the intense interview process Philippe Clement underwent to secure the Ibrox position. However, he says that Clement’s “interrogation” has paid off, as the Belgian has made a stellar start to his tenure in the hot seat.

American businessman Johnston, who took over as chairman in 2009 after Craig Whyte took over, is astonished by Clement’s efforts. The former manager of Genk, Club Brugge, and Monaco won the Viaplay Cup, guaranteed the team’s spot in the Europa League quarterfinals, and reduced the gap to five points on league leaders Celtic with a game remaining. Clement was only appointed in October.

Johnston also stated, “It was probably the most thorough process I’ve ever encountered,” prior to Philippe joining the club and us signing him off. He made these remarks to the Press Association news agency. While it is undeniable that there have been a few inexperienced decisions in the past, everyone got the opportunity to engage at the board level this time.

“From my standpoint, it’s my way of doing things. I don’t interview people. I interrogate them. That can sometimes be a fairly, in-your-face experience. It was a very healthy, very candid, two-way conversation. He correlated his expectations and ambitions with Rangers and we found out he does his homework carefully with respect to what the expectations were for Rangers as well as what the limitations were, and that was a big tick mark.

“I’ve been with him quite a bit personally since our first interaction, even though it was conducted over Zoom initially due to geographical constraints. I was present for the first several games, and as time passed, I grew more and more certain that we made the right decision.

It appears to have existed for a very long time. What’s even more astounding, in the board’s opinion, is that he completed this task in a comparatively short amount of time.

While we are now playing catch up, we are grateful that the majority of the supporters are still giving us a chance. We shall be informed if we are unable to meet our long-term obligations.

However, all I can say for now is that I’m really confident. However, football is involved. Neither on the field nor off, we are going into it with any guarantees.
