Quinn Spotted; How Much Power Does Coach Want in Move?

The Dallas Cowboys are playing host this week as the Shrine Bowl comes to town. Hosted in Frisco, at the Cowboys headquarters, the All-Star event helps prepare teams for the upcoming NFL Draft. As such, scouts, coaches, and front-office personnel want to get a closer look at the prospects. It’s a hub of football minds and an opportunity to talk shop while integral information is collected regarding measurements, interviews, and practice film. On Monday, Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was spotted at The Star. He was wearing Cowboys apparel and was seen talking to Dallas offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and vice president of player personnel Will McClay.

However, Quinn has also been a name teams have coveted in their head coaching searches. Is his most recent appearance evidence that he’s staying in Dallas?

It’s certainly better news than discord among the coaching staff, but no, Quinn participating in routine pre-draft events isn’t a significant indication of what’s to come.

Quinn isn’t a free agent, but the Cowboys can’t stop him from pursuing a promotion with another organization. Initially, he was pegged as the front-runner for the Seattle Seahawks head coaching gig after his former boss Pete Carroll stepped away from the limelight. He also has an in-person interview with the Washington Commanders set for Tuesday. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has long been connected to that opening, but Washington’s due diligence has extended to the other side of the ball. He is also on the short list of the Seattle Seahawks, with sources close to the situation helping our Mike Fisher of CowboysSI.com to pose some compelling questions/hints

How much ‘power’ does Quinn want in his next gig? *Can he bring/have his pick of offensive and defensive coordinators? Probably. Can he also bring his own personnel guy(s)? *Pete Carroll is now gone in Seattle. DQ is a “Pete guy.” does that make him ‘not a (GM) John Schneider guy’? *Would the Commanders follow up one defensive-minded head coach (Ron Rivera) with another? *Are there “non-football guys” making Washington decisions, and if so, would they prefer the “flash” of the offensive-minded (Ben Johnson)?

Quinn may be a rival by the end of the week. But for now, he’s the Cowboys defensive coordinator, and that comes with the normal responsibilities of the job. (And depending on Mike Macdonald and Ben Johnson interviews, he might stay that way.) Related: Sources: Cowboys Want Quinn; Rivera Backup Plan? The rumor mill never stops, but there’s no reason to get unnecessarily panicked about Quinn’s potential departure. He could very well leave, but until that’s official, Dallas’ defensive coordinator is simply doing what he’s getting paid to do.
