Stuart Gray, a former Celtic midfielder, has passed away at the age of 50, the club has revealed.

He played for Parkhead in the 1990s before moving to Reading in 1998, and he also spent time with Rushden & Diamonds near the end of his career.

Gray, who was capped at under-21 level for Scotland, revealed last year that he was fighting cancer.

A club statement read: “Everyone at Celtic is very saddened by the news that former Celtic player Stuart Gray has died at the age of 50 due to illness.

“The midfielder, son of Eddie and nephew of Frank Gray, both stars of the famed Leeds United side of the early 1970s, came through the youth ranks at Celtic and made his debut in a 1-0 home win over Aberdeen on May 1, 1993.

“That was the first of 32 games for the Hoops in which he scored once, in a 4-1 home victory over Raith Rovers in May 1996.

“Stuart joined Tommy Burns’ Reading team in 1998 and spent three years there before moving on to play for Rushden & Diamonds for four years, making 142 games.

“Everyone at Celtic Park is thinking about and praying for Stuart’s family and friends during this difficult time.

“In respect to Stuart, Celtic players will wear black armbands in today’s game against Ross County.
