Although Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery acknowledges he has no control over his players’ personal

lives, he insists they must be prepared to give up everything in order to concentrate on becoming better football players.

Emery has had a revolutionary effect on the Villa Park team since succeeding Steven Gerrard as manager.

Due to his outstanding work, the team has moved up from 17th place to European football, and this

season, a Champions League bid is beckoning.

Emery couldn’t have inherited any group of players and worked his magic, he needed a team willing to

listen to him and buy into his methods. Ahead of Villa’s clash with Man City on Wednesday – which provides Emery’s side with the chance to match a club record of 14 home league wins in a row – he insists they must continue to focus solely on football to compete among the elite.

“Players can always improve and they can improve their attitudes too, if they want to sacrifice their lives thinking more about football,” Emery said. “It’s not only when they’re here at the training ground. It’s important they have this attitude when they are at home in their private lives as well.

“Here, too, my goal is to attempt to introduce and be demanding of our way of living. Because, in the end, your way of living outside of here is being involved inside. Think football and show a strong sense of loyalty to your team and teammates.

“Aim to be modest and recognize that everything is an opportunity for improvement, even the coaches’ attempts to help you develop. The players here truly have my utmost admiration.

Although it’s not perfect, it does convey my dedication to this situation, how we can get better, and how I want the players to apply their behavior to the commitments they wish to make. Although some players find it simpler than others, everyone is attempting to set in the same.
