The comprehensive Celtic plan for Rangers fan return as images of safety nets emerge amid £2.6m installation
There will finally be away fans at an Old Firm derby when Celtic hosts their rivals this weekend, but the 2,500 Rangers supporters
inside Parkhead will have a new experience thanks to new safety measures. The tit for tat ticket controversy has been going on since
2023, when both teams have locked away fans from their respective grounds, citing fan safety as one of the reasons. Nevertheless, an
agreement has been reached to lift the ban, and 4% of tickets are now sold to traveling supporters. Additionally, pictures of black
netting has been posted on social media, showing black netting around the away end.
Following a slew of missile-throwing incidents during this match, Gers supporters will be encircled by black safety netting in the
stadium’s corner between the Main Stand and the Jock Stein Stand.
Celtic officials have put up a £2.6 million segregation fence to keep opposing supporters separate on Sunday, and it is believed that
similar measures will be implemented for the return games at Ibrox the following season.
Last summer, Glasgow City Council received a planning application that stated: “Installation of temporary netting to the Southeast
corner between the home and away support.” Before every Celtic vs. Rangers game, the netting is put up, and it is taken down
afterwards.
The penultimate derby encounter of the season between the pair is of little consequence on the park. Brendan Rodgers’ side are 13
points clear at the top of the Premiership standings and are three wins away from retaining the title.
With the Gers up 3-1 from the first leg and their second leg matchup against Fenerbahce playing today, Barry Ferguson’s team will be
hoping to have a Europa League quarterfinal to look forward to.
However, after so much squabbling between the teams, all eyes will still be on Celtic Park on Sunday, particularly on the stands, to see
if the new safety measures prove to be beneficial.
