Sunderland suffered another frustrating defeat on Tuesday night, drawing 1-1 at home against Paul Heckingbottom’s Preston North End.

Sunderland continued to lose points in their promotion race, which now appears to be based solely on finishing in the top six rather than the top two.

The Black Cats hosted Preston on Tuesday night at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland eventually drew 1-1 with Preston, who had grabbed the lead with a magnificent strike from Emil Riis before equalising with an even finer strike from Romaine Mundle.

The Black Cats remain in fourth place in the Championship table, with a 13-point advantage over the top six. Leeds United, in second, is seven points ahead of the Black Cats, while Sheffield United, in first, is ten points ahead. Tuesday night’s game provided plenty of discussion points.

Preston wasted so much time in the second half, Wilson Isidor missed a sitter, and Gary Bennett believes he glimpsed something else.

Eliezer Mayenda ‘was not happy’ with Regis Le Bris during Sunderland’s 1-1 draw against Preston.

Regis Le Bris startled many when he started Eliezer Mayenda and Isidor up front against Preston. Mayenda has kept Isidor out of the lineup recently, scoring three goals in two games leading up to the Preston encounter.

Isidor, the top scorer, had been kept on the bench. Neither seems to have a clear advantage when working together. However, many believe Mayenda performed well, if not better than Isidor.

However, in the second half, the Spaniard was substituted, much to the dismay of the crowd and Mayenda’s fury.

Bennett, speaking on Total Sport after the game, emphasised Mayenda’s body language after being substituted, saying he didn’t appear happy at all.

Bennett commented: “I think he worked hard. He did appear threatening at times. But look at his body language, especially when he was substituted; he seemed unhappy. He wasn’t satisfied.”

Michael Graham praised Eliezer Mayenda at Sunderland. For much of the season, the 19-year-old Mayenda has remained under the radar. However, he has demonstrated in recent weeks that he is a player with a lot to offer both the first team and the starting XI.

Michael Graham praised Mayenda’s season thus far, naming him one of the campaign’s standout players. Graham wrote: “Eliezer Mayenda now has seven goals and five assists in just 17 starts this season.

Hibs were unable to secure a game around this time last year. The 19-year-old is one of the highlights of Sunderland’s amazing season.”

So it’s not unexpected that Mayenda was unhappy after getting bought off against Preston, especially since Isidor missed that sitter and didn’t accomplish much in the game overall.

Sunderland return to action at Coventry City on Saturday, and Le Bris will have to choose between Mayenda and Isidor.
