Former Manchester City goalkeeper and coach Steve Fleet has passed away at the age of 87. Fleet, who also played for Bolton Wanderers and Wrexham, was a respected figure in English football, both as a player and later as a coach.
Fleet spent much of his playing career as a backup to legendary City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann, making only a handful of first-team appearances. However, he went on to establish himself as a first-choice keeper at Wrexham before later taking on coaching roles at Stockport County and Altrincham.
In 1973, he returned to Manchester City as a youth coach, helping to develop future stars such as Peter Barnes and Clive Wilson. His work played a key role in City’s successful youth system during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He later took on various roles within the club, including managing the Platt Lane training complex and working in sports development.
Tributes have poured in from former players and fans, with many recalling his deep connection to Manchester City and his contributions to football over the decades. A lifelong City supporter, he remained involved with the club’s Former Players’ Association until his passing.
